So on Tuesday I had a 24 hour EEG put in place and had it removed Wednesday. Today was the follow up visit where we would discuss the results. Here is, in a nutshell, how that appointment went…
Me: Hi
Dr: Hi, how are you?
Me: I’m you know doi-
Dr (abruptly): your EEG is still abnormal so I think you should try a new medicine.
Me: abnormal as in seiz-
Dr: but you don’t want the medicine because you keep having bad reactions, so I can appreciate that.
Me: yeah, I’m super sensitive.
Dr: yeah yeah, ok so no medicine and you seem to be doing better?
Me: yeah I’ve been trying to avoid my triggers and stay calm.
Dr: (mumbling) But you know you can’t just always avoid your triggers cause their (incoherent speech)
Me: I’ve been facing my triggers and defeating my inner demons and I’m feeling stronger. But can we actually talk about what the results showed?
Dr: okay so you go with no medication today and if you have another seizure you just come back and we’ll start you on medicine.
Me: I found out they never gave me an initial EEG after my brain injury, they just put me on dilauded preemptively.
Dr: *Blinks
Dr: I have the paperwork from your EEG at the hospital 2 months ago.
Me: ummm…
Dr: I’ll go get it
Me: *blinks
Dr: (walks out and returns with papers) here it is, see the results?
Me: yes, but I’ve been having deja vu auras since the brain injury, I feel they should have done an EEG either while I was comatose, or after I woke up.
Dr: Yeah when you have an injury like yours it’s possible to develop seizure activity where there is damage.
Me: Right, but I’ve basically was driving illegally unbeknownst to my knowledge for like 14 years with active temporal lobe epilepsy from what you said in the hospital in June.
Dr: We can’t really call it epilepsy unless you are born with it.
Me: but in June you gave me the diagnosis of TLE?
Dr: ok so no new medicine today and if you have a seizure come back and we’ll get you on some medicine.
Me: ……….
I’m hoping my Mother is finally catching on to why I don’t have much trust in doctors anymore… I should be getting an actual copy of the results next week maybe I can find a new neurologist to actually discuss the results with me. It may have been the language barrier but oh my lanta that conversation was hella confusing!
